The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India, founded in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The IPL is the most-attended cricket league in the world and ranks sixth among all sports leagues. It has been the source of numerous innovations in the sport, including introducing the concept of franchise ownership, day-night matches, strategic time-outs and several other rule changes. The IPL has also had a major impact on the commercialization of cricket, with many of its franchise owners being some of the world’s most prominent business tycoons and celebrity owners.
